The GRAND OPENING

San Felipe’s “La Caminata Contra el Cancer” has struggled through its first three years of existence to raise sufficient funds and public interest to do everything in their power to…
a. Employ a knowledgeable, experienced, willing to work, Registered Nurse
b. Secure the assistance of Centro de Salud by allowing our nurse to work in their facility
c. Spreading the word throughout our community that there is help for less fortunate men and women suffering from (or possibly suffering from) one form of cancer or another
d. Bringing the importance of having periodic mammograms and pap smears to the attention of local community women of all ages
e. Taking nearly 1,500 pap smears since opening our program
f. Scheduling and taking patients to and from cancer-related medical services in Mexicali.
g. The discovery, identification and treatment of previously unknown cancer cases among new patients.
And now —
***three years after Freda Barber suggested to Michele MacDonald that, owing to their good fortune as cancer survivors, they do something to help less fortunate local men and women cancer patients…
***three years after (Michele & Freda’s) Cancer Walk Steering Committee formed and pledged themselves to the task ahead…
***three years of canvassing the local community for Cancer Walk helpers and participants…
***and three years of soliciting and receiving funds to support their project…
San Felipe’s LA CAMINATA CONTRA EL CANCER opened its local CANCER CENTER complete with a Patient’s Examination Room, completely operational Mammogram machine and film development service, and professional medical personnel in attendance.
…and all of this was recognized and praised by San Felipe- and Mexicali-based political and medical dignitaries during Tuesday’s (May 11) OPENING CEREMONIES. In the presence of more than one hundred celebrants, Freda and Michele cut the ceremonial ribbon, the center was officially opened, and ladies and gentlemen poured in to learn what this “new kid on the block” could do for them.
It was a proud moment for more than a dozen unsung local women heroes (and their mates) who have made every possible effort to bring this achievement to reality.
It was a proud moment during which many of us regaled at the many times we’d been asked, “Where’s all that money going?”
It was... NO, IT IS A PROUD MOMENT ...to stop and reflect on our ability to serve the public.
If you’d like to know how it feels, drop by our “CanCen”, and leave a dollar or two in our “tip jar”. I guarantee you that dollar will go a long way towards our local “people-to-people” cancer education, consultation and treatment project. In fact, owing to that dollar, you can bet there will be men, women and children in our community who might not be without it.

FORGIVE US FOR EXPOSING OUR PRIDE...
