ABOUT US

San Felipe Cancer Walk Is About Creating a Healthier Community

Most of us have a friend or family member who has had Cancer but how many of you really know anything about this death-dealing disease? The most common forms of cancer may be Breast, Prostate, Lung, Ovarian, Colon, Urinary and Bladder but did you know there are more than 40 different cancers?

If that got your attention then we must ask…

  • Have you ever seen a man, woman or child begging for money to pay for his or her cancer treatment?
  • Did you know that mastectomies (for example) are being performed here—and in Mexicali—that leave crippling, deforming scars?
  • Are you aware of the ladies and gentlemen in (our)(your) community who commit suicide because they have no money, no insurance, and no hope of overcoming their cancer?

Because each of these questions relates to real people in our community, can you and I continue to ignore them so long as they have been and are being handed medical death sentences? Wherever our voices can be heard—or these pages read—every man, woman and child capable of standing up to this call is needed to bring a terrible social injustice to a stop.

Recently, Alfreda Teresa Barber, President of the San Felipe Association of Retired Persons, approached Michele MacDonald, Vice-President, San Felipe Rotary Club, to suggest a helping hand. Other women came forward, added their ideas and not only was the San Felipe Cancer Walk Project created, it was placed on an annually recurring basis as a means of insuring the community would continue to fight one of the worlds’ most debilitating diseases.

Las Amigas joined the project as did Señora Olivia Castellanos Siquieros, current Director of San Felipe’s COBACH, and Arquitecta Rosalina Ramos Lazcano. Mrs. Barber’s husband spoke to Señora Yolanda Tafoya who spoke to the Director of our local DIF and a wave was begun that will slowly but surely cover San Felipe in a unified movement to achieve the Project’s goal.

In America, Canada and Europe breast cancer strikes one of every seven women. We don't know the statistics for other cancers nor do we know Mexico's cancer statistics but we do know need when we see it.

The SAN FELIPE CANCER WALK,
—and local cancer victims—
NEED YOU!
